Years ago, I was fishing near Bishop, California, with my friends Ron and Dave. Dave and I were caught up in catching fish and wandered far down a creek, away from camp. We didn't notice as twilight fell, then darkness. Soon, we were lost.
Back at camp, Ron knew we were in trouble. He climbed on a rock with a Coleman lantern and kept waving it, minute after minute. When I looked up and finally saw that light, it felt like the best thing I'd ever seen. Our friend’s light guided us back.
Everyone sometimes gets into the wilderness in life. Everyone needs someone to shine a light. That's brotherhood.
I think about the redwoods in Northern California, where I grew up. These giants, the tallest trees in the world, have surprisingly shallow roots - only six feet deep. Their secret? Their roots are interlocked with other redwoods. When storms come, they stand together.
Even the prophet Elijah needed brotherhood. After his great victory over the prophets of Baal, a single threat sent him to hide in a cave. Depressed, he asked God to take his life. God's response? "I have 7,000 other men who haven't bowed to Baal."
The problem wasn't that Elijah was weak—it was that he was isolated.
Look around you. Who's holding you up right now? Who are you supporting? Or have you been trying to weather life's storms with roots that don't connect into a community?
The strength of your future may well depend on how you answer this question.
