Growing up in a neighborhood of gangs and criminals, Ray's childhood home was once shot until it looked "like swiss cheese." He overheard a teacher once say of him, "He's never going to amount to anything because he's a dirty Mexican."

Ray never experienced genuine love or affection. His father hugged him only once in his lifetime and never said "I love you." After college graduation, Ray became a policeman. One day, Ray's grandfather warned him: "You need to leave California. Your cousins will kill you if you stay."
For years, Ray remained emotionally imprisoned despite a successful military career, marriage, and even receiving Christ. He returned from overseas deployment and joined a group doing Majoring in Men curriculum. Ray said, "These were the first books I ever read cover to cover." Ray got the seed of the Word, but he still didn't change. The hard exterior remained.
After seven children, Ray's wife finally confronted him during counseling: "You're not my pastor," she told their counselor, "and he's not my husband.” Then she walked out.
That breaking point became Ray's breakthrough moment.
Ray says, "CMN books, especially 'Never Quit,' started pulling at me. Ed was telling me, 'Don't quit, God's going to deliver you from this."
